I am only partially blogging to get a good grade. But rather to make sure that when we all have classes together we can help each other with new sites and information. Hi Sandeep and All,

I just wanted to thank you for the class. It was a great learning experience, I learned a lot. I sure dont believe anyone who says that searching online is easy. I thought so, but now that I took this class, I can say that it is not easy. There are so many little things that super important. If we dont know them, it is hard to find what we are looking for. Thanks to Sandeep, I now know a couple of those little secrets, which help me find what I want. I will definitely use this knowledge in future and I sure it will help me a lot. I was so proud of what I learned, that all my family members and friends were excited to see what I know and what I can do with the internet. I can build my own web site; I can put online and made is easy to be searched for. I can also find web sites, that are not well known to the public and I can find statistical information about it. I can also compare web sites and make suggestions for improvement.

Again, Thank You Sandeep. It was great experience.

Yeah, so I was a little confused after my presentation today and now I know why! I realized on the way home I was missing two of my slides. I had already uploaded the file to my website and ended up adding two more pages, but I forgot to delete the file and upload it again. *smack*

Ironically, after class today I was online and one of my friends IM'd me and asked me if I knew what furl was, needless to say I did! I hope people keep blogging on this site. I've learned about a lot of valuable resources on the internet and it would be wonderful if people still wrote on here about any great sites or services that they come across. I'll get the ball rolling...healthfinder.com, imdb.com, moviemistakes.com One is educational and the other two are fun ways to spend countless hours online! Well I need to get going, study time. RSS Strategy

After researching Feedster (which you will discover in my presentation later today), I got curious about tags and feeds. Here are some excerpts from an interesting article I found. It goes into detail about RSS marketing strategies and how to tailor them to your website. It's a little beyond what we've learned in the class, but I think the author does a good job of explaining the concepts.

Your RSS Marketing Strategy: Deciding How To Deliver Your RSS Content

You're interested in RSS marketing, but there either seem to be so many options of how to do it or you've only ever come accross simple RSS feeds that just don't seem to be the approach you're looking for.

The problem with most RSS marketing plans is that the marketer doesn't really go beyond providing a simple RSS feed for all of his online news or his blog. But since you've been reading this column for a while now you know for a fact that RSS offers so much more.

To get started the right way you need to correctly plan your RSS Marketing strategy, starting by deciding how you are going to deliver your RSS content.

The right way to go, even if you're only starting out with a simple RSS strategy, is to provide individual RSS feeds for:
your individual target audiences,
your different types of content and
even your different content topics.

Think of this as a consequtive list of how to develop your RSS strategy.

Target Audiences
Start by listing the target audiences you want to deliver your content to via RSS. Each of your audiences has different content needs, resulting in different groups of RSS feeds that need to be created for these target audiences. One group for the media, the other for your employees, the other for the general public, the other for your existing customers and so on. You can even go further and divide your master groups in sub-groups, based on their prevailing interests.

Content Types
Now consider the different types of content you want to deliver to these audiences. For example your latest news, your blog posts, your how-to articles, your press releases, your podcasts, the latest posts from your forums, direct communications messages and so on. In most cases these types of content don't mix well together. If someone wants to receive your blog updates, which are full of your company representatives' personal opinions and commentary, they don't want to receive your corporate-speak press releases. If someone is interested in what's happening in your forum and what the latest forum posts are, they don't want to receive your how-to articles in the same RSS feed, simply because these two types of content are so much different. And so on. Essentially, you will need to provide separate feeds for each of the different content types, and you will need to determine what content types you wish to deliver to each of your target audience groups and sub-groups.

Content Topics
Finally take a look at each individual content type for each individual target audience and further break that down by content topic, if needed. And if you're trying to cover many different topics for each content type, you will need to provide different RSS feeds for these different topics, because, again, people interested in topic A are not neccessarily also interested in topic B.
While this may sound complicated, it's really simple once you start doing it.
The point is, this is about giving your subscribers choice of what they subscribe to. Instead of forcing them to subscribe to everything, allow them to subscribe to only what they want and need.

RSS Feeds With Content Targeting
Now imagine that you want to create individualized campaigns to individual subscribers, based on the information you already have in your database about their activities, demographics and so on, for example to send a promotion for product A only to those subscribers that might be most interested in product A.

In this case you will need an RSS solution that can pull this data from your database and then segment your subscribers based on the actual data.

Autoresponder RSS Feeds
Since their introduction, e-mail autoresponders have become a relatively mainstream internet direct marketing tool, although they haven't really made their way to the world of public relations.

The concept is simple - a certain action by your visitors on your website triggers a sequence of e-mail messages, delivered to that visitor, provided you have his e-mail address, over a period of several days.

Direct marketers use this to automatically communicate with the prospect after a certain action, trying to get him to do what they want.

The most common application is offering your visitors a free report, delivered to them via e-mail. After subscribing they start receiving consequtive parts of the report day after day or a every few days, receiving both new information as well as being exposed to the marketer's promotional message.

Other applications include autoresponder messages in relation to transactional e-mail:
Subscribe to a free e-mail newsletter. The first autoresponder message thanks you for the subscription and also gives you access to one of the newsletter issues. A couple of days later, while you're still "hot as a lead", you receive another e-mail, pertaining to the newsletter topic, giving you more advice or information on the topic and trying achieve a sales conversion. And so on.

Think of your RSS publishing strategy and try to establish which of the these publishing models your RSS publishing tool should support:
Topical or Target Audience Oriented RSS Feeds
Customizable RSS Feeds
Search-Based RSS Feeds
Personalized RSS Feeds
RSS Feeds With Content Targeting
Autoresponder RSS Feeds

Well, as others have said, this has been a great course. I've really appreciated the hands-on learning approach. To find important information, I no longer have to simply trudge over to the main Google page and conducting a ho-hum basic search. I now have a wealth of tools and techniques from which to draw. These will be quite valuable to me as I graduate from UWB and start a new job.

I also appreciate how Sandeep has taught us about website and blog optimization. Before I took this course, I had no idea how PageRanks work or what optimization means. Now, I've seen first-hand how I can create a brand-new website and then watch it move up the ranks in search engines. I also know how to follow web- and search-based trends using tools such as Alexa and Google Trends.

I only wish there were an automatic refresher for this course once a year. I'm sure that the tools we use today will evolve quickly and perhaps be replaced by others in a short time. I hope that I will be able to keep my search "toolbox" up-to-date.

I've enjoyed reading others' blogs and browsing through their websites. I wish all of you good luck in whatever your futures hold.

Hello everyone,

Well, later today will be our last class session and I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed everyone's presentations and have learned a lot from all of you. There are so many things to know about the Internet and I feel like I've learned some of the most important tools when it comes to researching businesses. I have enjoyed learning differnt tools to find information on companies. I can honestly say that I am very comfortable using sites like Google Trends, alexa, inventory.overture, way back machine and all of the other neat sites we've explored for researching. At first, I wasn't sure how I would like this class because I assumed I knew most of what was being taught, but I was mistaken. I know so much more now!

Thank you Sandeep for the great inside provided on using the WWW and practice with presenting. It was very nice to meet all of you ... Good Luck!

My reflection on the class

This class has been a great experience. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time. I learned more in this class compared to a capstone course! As Miriam mentioned a previous post we all have become advanced searchers especially using the Google search engine. Prior to this class I didn’t believe that I had problems with searching for information. I usually found what I needed. But after learning about the concept of PageRank and how to use operators I came to realize that I could become a more efficient with my searching. I am still not sure if I like the idea of PageRank especially since it doesn’t consider quality. It still drives me crazy when I search on Google and the first few links are useless.

One of my proudest accomplishments in this class has been publishing. Reflecting back to the first day of class I was completely lost. I had no idea how to post anything online. I was sure that I had signed up for the wrong class. But spending time and reading about how to use Catalyst I was able to choose a template design and added a picture gallery. I really think I did a great job on my very first home page.

Two of my favorite assignments were Google My Way and the Search Word Analysis project. I was amazed at all the product offerings of Google. After testing out more content with my Google Personalized page I came to appreciate the simple, classic main page. I enjoyed researching for the Search Word Analysis project and coming up with recommendations to improve Dell’s current homepage based on popular searches.

I learned a great deal from the projects in class. But I think the most imperative thing I learned in this class (which took awhile) was to structure projects according to what I thought would be effective. I came to expect to receive clear directions from teachers. But I liked the approach that Sandeep took in giving projects and letting us explore and decide how to complete the projects. This is a good way of making us think more on our own.

Coming out of this class I think I greatly benefited from the individual presentations. While at UWB I have always presented in groups and was comfortable with that. I feared presenting in front of people by myself. The practice in this class has made me more confident but I still would like to improve.

This has been a great class. I hope you all enjoy the rest of the summer!

For those of you who don't remember, I chose Myspace for the project in class last Tuesday. I was on Motley Fool (One of my favorite finance sites) and I came across a very interesting article.

"According to the data from tracking firm Hitwise, MySpace.com was the No. 1 most visited website for the week ended July 8, with 4.46% of all Web visits in the U.S., knocking Yahoo! Mail from the top spot. Yahoo! took exception to the rankings' comparison of all of MySpace with the Yahoo! Mail site, given that Yahoo! comprises a network of many different sites and services. I tend to agree, but the data is still interesting to contemplate, taken with a grain of salt."

Battle for hosted app market

We've all seen some of the evidence for the move towards hosting applications online with Google's online spreadsheet program. The concept is simple of course; why should we bother going to the trouble of installing programs on our computers when we could just type in a URL, log in and the program opens??

Google has made it's move offering the online spreadsheet in an effort to compete with Excel, but there are many companies providing various (some quite complex) programs using the same concept. Microsoft, not wanting to be left out of what it views as the next big thing, has unveiled online versions of it's Windows and Office applications. Microsoft likes to refer to its online applications as "Live Software." In my opinion, Microsoft has a long way to go before this live software is anywhere close to being as useful as its standard Office applications, but I guess they want to get their foot in the door before other companies grab the market. You can read a little more about it here.

Once really nice example of online software done right is the CRM software offered by Salesforce.com. This company provides a CRM software that is entirely available online to paying customers. The benefit to companies who choose this software is that they dont have to invest as much in server hardware to host the application in-house or the associated IT costs.

In the near future you won't be going down to the store, buying some software and installing it on your computer. All you'll have to do is subscribe to the program online and begin using it right away.

I think I'm finally starting to get a hang of this blogging stuff. To be completely honest I've never really been fond of writing journals or blogs or anything of that nature. But I am happy to announce that I am starting to come around on my opinion about publishing blogs. It fun!!!

There are alot of things that I have learned during the course of this class. One of the primary things that I learned how to do was creating and updating my own webpage. Needless to say, I had never put together a website of any kind prior to this class. In all honesty I was a little intimidated and a little lost when we started creating and adding links to our websites. But, through trial-and-error (a alot of painfull frustration) I have seemingly mastered (tenatively) the art of updating my website without having to ask for help every two seconds. I am proud of myself!! (Please don't laugh. I really am proud!)

Anyhow, that will do it for this blog. Hope you all have a nice weekend and I will look forward to our final meeting and presentations on Tuesday.

Mark Cuban is a Toolbox

It's amazing that a guy who still hasn't figured out the proper intricacies of a topic as mundane as the contracted form of "it is" can still manage to have such a high opinion of himself.

But enough about me. We're talking about Mark Cuban.

Most of Cuban's ranting falls into the category of "Everyone complains about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it." Nothing "unique" has happened on the net in "forever?" You're right, Cuban. This whole Internet thang is sad and tired. I give it six months before you can buy AOL for the change you find in your couch.

Further, Mark stretches the truth just a bit in talking about how net speeds haven't increased in TEN YEARS (emphasis his). I remember trying to get DSL just seven years ago (that's 1999, Cuban. I wouldn't want your head to explode from an attempt at complex subtraction). Even living in Microsoft's backyard, I couldn't get DSL until '99 and even then it wasn't at the speed it's available at today. Ten years ago puts us squarely back in the days of 56Flex, with that blistering ISDN you dismissed as ancient just becoming available for the priveleged few.

Markie further "complains" about not being able to buy a PC that has problems running "any" application. Leaving aside the obvious interpretation that Mark must not be a PC gamer (can't fault him there), it's obvious he hasn't been paying attention to the OS overhead that Windows Vista is going to be bringing us as part of those "innovations" that Mark says he wants.

Cube then even answers his own earlier question but doesn't bother to notice. If it's now becoming as cheap and easy for you and me and a dog named Boo to create and publish captivating, professional sites (in theory anyway, I'm still holding on to my hack cred), then what would be the incentive for ISPs to provide greater speeds if their own share of the audience is being constantly eroded by this plethora of new sites anyway? And how do all these sites manage to stick around and pay their hosting charges if the net is becoming so "boring?"

I don't think the net is "boring." I just think it's beyond Cuban to keep up with it.

Page Rank!

So google has updated my site, but it has not increased my pagerank. I am still below Na*te Da*wgz page which is a complete insult to myself. Sandeep said he would share his pagerank power with me to increase the ranking of my site. Hopefully this works out, I dont want to have to go back to hijacking wikipedia pages just to increase my pagerank (not that I have).

Sandeep said he gave me the power of his site. The next update will be my last chance to top the charts so I am waiting nervously. I must beat N*AT*E DA*WG*Z. I shouldn't even mention his name, it probably is improving his pagerank. I have changed my post name to Nathan MacDonald so it will search higher. I even linked myself from a couple blogs. This is what the quarter has come down too, will i be a WINNER or LOSER?

Mr. Blogmaverick seems like a really boring human being. Its as if he has nothing else to do except whine about the only subject he knows anything about - computers and related ideas. Its fantastic how someone with a minimal amount of logic can rant and rave himself into stardom. Why do people care what he says? Blogging is a way of making ridiculous claims without backing them up. Did he site anything? No that would have actually taking some work to make his arguement legitimate. Instead he whines online, people believe it because he uses numbers, and BAM, hes a celebrity. Get rid of these lazy computer nerds or business owners that take hearsay and turn it into fact. Get rid of these people that cannot do an ounce of real research on their own and articulate an intelligent idea. This guy got lucky, made some money, and somehow thinks that makes him matter. Learn to research and prove a point instead of taking the easy way out by complaining about everything.

What Happened Professor Krisnamurthy?????

My Google Position has dropped significantly. My Blog is still at the top when i search for "Dennis TJ Wang", however my student page is no where to be found. Prior to today, my student site was #2 rite after my blog, but today, my student site is no longer availible on google. All that I can think of is something happened on University of Washington's server. however my site is still availible when I go there directly.

This is a interesting phenominon. Could it have anything to do with Prof. Krishnamurthy linking us to his own site??

FURL IT!

Furl is a program that allows you to take your bookmarks with you. It then allows you to save them privately or publically as well as rank them 1-5. You can then search your bookmarks on a certain subject either publically or locally and it will organize relevance from 1-5. This is great for school research, too bad im graduating suckers!

The key to using Furl is that you need a button in your browser that you can click to save the item you are viewing. Thanks to technology called "bookmarklets" you don't need to install any software to do this. If you haven't yet put the button in your browser, read the button help page for all the details.
Once you have the button, continue to use the Internet as you normally would and whenever you find something of interest, click the "Furl It" button to add the page to your archive. You'll have the option to add comments, categorize and date the item before you click "Save."

I sabotaged my blog!

I think Google might have banned my blog! I had become master (the #1 return) of one of my search terms "UW Bothell Blog", but now I am not even listed at all. In an effort to increase my page rank, I had made three dummy sites from free webhosting services that contained links to my blog. I was doing some research with Google (go figure) about how the page rank system works and I found out that they will ban sites if they think people are making pages just to increase their page rank. OOPS! Anyways, I've been trying to get more people to traffic my blog and post on it. I haven't had very much luck, although one of my professors was kind enough to set up a link to my blog from his personal page. I've decided to make another blog, one that will have a greater number of possible visitors. I figure that only so many people are interested in UW Bothell, so my new blog will be something that people from all over might be interested in. My ideas so far are the Middle East conflict and drink recipes. Maybe I'll combine the two, because who doesn't want a few cocktails after reading about how messed up things are in the Middle East? Another blog idea I have is a financial blog, it would primarily focus on the stock market and stocks that I think will perform well in the near future. My original idea was a stock blog, but there are so many competitors out there for search optimization. Although now that Google appears to have banned my other blog from their search results, what have I got to lose?

I was looking around the internet last night for information about what the hot trends are in the internet. I came across the page http://www.webtalkradio.com/news/000024.shtml which lists the “ten hottest internet trends for 2005”. Although we’re half way through 2006, I found the page very interesting. Here are the trends that they listed:

The Last Class

Wow, a month has already went by and this class is already over. What have we all learned this quarter? The meaning of life? I think not. What we have learned is how to utilize the web to its fullest. By using tools like Alexa, and Overture, we can use the web and better understand how business around the world operate. The Google excersices in class have benefited us by giving is a better understanding of how and why Google operates the way it does. Watching one of the founders in the video in class was very beneficial to us all. Learning how these tremendously smart individuals think will help us in our own lives for many years to come.

Searching the web can be used for entertainment, but also, more importantly, used as a great tool for business as well as research. With this better understanding of the World Wide Web, I am now ready to go into the real world with the useful knowledge and provide that to my future employer with great pleasure; as I am sure many individuals in the work force have no clue how to search the web for useful information.

I would also like to thank Professor Krishnamurthy for providing us with this great class and this great knowledge. It was a very informative class that will benefit us all for the rest of our lives. The knowledge that I have received from this class and Prof. Krishnamurthy's other classes has proved to be most useful.

So, after four weeks of this class, what have I learned?

I learned that the web is a great asset to the world and is very beneficial in every aspect of life. From entertainment, to business, to research and even education, the web will is always there with useful information that is constantly being updated.

iTunes vs. Limewire

That was the title of my final choice for todays class. After much persecution and prejudice I was finally allowed this as a topic.My first choices were myspace (was ignored) -> Donald Trump (Not allowed) -> Britney Spears (right after someone took martha stewart, still wasnt allowed) -> iTunes.Then 90% into my iTunes powerpoint I was verbally assaulted that Limewire wasn't even a competitor of iTunes.After surpassing all of these barriers in my way to success I achieved my goal and factually reported on the status of iTunes and Limewire as competitors.I would thank to de-thank Dennis and Professor K. for trying to crush my hopes and dreams!I love bloggin.

A summary of my experience Summer 2006 at UWB
Summer 2006 UWB has been a intense summer for me so far. As most of you already know I am currently taking 15 credits in what is essentially 4.5 weeks. This is 3 classes, twice a week, for four and half hours each. While far from ideal, I wanted to graduate as soon as possible and this was the only way to do it. Following is a summary of my classes and my experiences.

Consumer Marketing:

This class is very interesting and should be a core requirement of some sort. While the assignments were not really attached to the in-class lectures, I still attended because it was interesting. Overall, this was a great class with only a recommendation to have the assignments mirror the lectures.

Search and the World Wide Web 2006:

This class is exactly what a summer class should be like. I’ve learned more about searching, web sites, and just the web in general then I should ever need to know. At the same time I had fun and was interested the entire class time. With minimal homework, but maximum knowledge gained, this class has the summer quarter technique fine tuned to perfection!

Great Books in Business:

While unnecessarily ambiguous at first this class has turned out to be my most important management class. Through actual researching (requiring me to actually look at real life books) I have learned a plethora of knowledge on management. The discussions in class were invaluable as well as the teamwork. Fantastic class, my only recommendation: less ambiguity!

UW Bothell vs. Seattle

Hey Everybody,

This is my second quarter here at the Bothell campus. I transferred here from the Seattle campus and I am LOVING it here. I'm not sure if its just personal preference, but if you hate traffic, thousands of other students fighting for the classes you want, and t.a.'s that dont provide a personal learning atmosphere, you're in the right place.

The Bothell campus has actually made my college experience enjoyable, even the homework at times. Students, Teachers and Staff know me by name, and for the first time I actually feel a sense of belonging. I have also discovered that I receive the same advantages that the main campus has to offer their students, if not even more. The education is great, the teamwork is fun, and the networking is better than I could ask for.

So, in my humble opinion, UW Bothell rocks! Thanks for reading.

Word Inventory

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to say a few things about our last project. Having the ability to search the online volume of certain words is a skill that I never thought would be useful or possible. But after the word inventory project, I realized how important it is to know exactly what words are the most popular. For instance, if you were running a business and decided that it would be profitable to go online the wording of your web page is going to directly influence the amount of traffic that your site recieves. Before you build your site, word inventory would be a very useful resource because it will give you the most common word searches. You could fill your web pages with all the most popular word searches. That way, more traffic will be routed to your site.
When I used word inventory to search the volume of Budweiser, I found that most of the searches were coming from the Midwest (St. Louis). That makes a lot of sense because that is where it is brewed and the company has a strong influence in that area. The European volume was the least popular, especially in the Netherlands. This coincides because this is where Heineken was born.
It is this kind of information that I never would have thought would be important, but this class is allowing me to develop a stronger business mind.
I am also learning a lot from other people in class. This is due mainly from all the presentations. You can learn a lot about somebody by the topics that they choose to examine and research. It is amazing to see the amount of information that one can dig up online in 2 and half hours.

Keyword search for Lexus

My interest in cars and fast things have been prevalent for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite line of cars are manufactured by Toyota's Lexus brand. The cars are sleek, luxurious, and performance oriented. Lexus, as a brand, has continued to gain popularity in the US luxury car segment since its introduction in the late 1980's.

The search volume for Lexus (as documented by Google Trends) is very healthy in the US and around the world. In fact, it seems to trail only Mercedes and BMW in terms of search volume for the luxury cars. That is very impressive especially considering that Mercedes and BMW have been around for more than a century and both companies have been producing automobiles for well over 80 years. Lexus on the other hand has only been around since 1989-- that was when it was formally introduced by Toyota in the US market.

One interesting fact about Lexus is that the search volume for the brand is very low in Japan and was non-existent before mid-year 2004 (Japan is where the parent manufacturing company, Toyota, is based). The reason for this seeming anomally is that Lexus did not exist as a separate brand in Japan untill June 2005. Prior to that most Lexus models found here in the US were exclusive to this part of the world and to some parts of Europe. However, Lexus models were being sold in Japan during that time but they were being marketed as higher end Toyotas.

Based on the keyword search it seems like 81 percent of the keywords that people use to search for the company lead directly to dealership searches. Followed by searches for accessories, parts, pictures and reviews for specific models. Fortunately, brand confusion in the searches appear to be minimal. The single brand confused search term that popped up on the search-term list was for an actress names Lexus Locklear (don't search for her on the cast list of any mainstream movies because as one of my fellow students pointed out she "acts" in certain special types of films.)

Anyhow, I learned today that there are tools available online that can help people and companies find out how they are being searched. What search terms bring the majority of visitors to their sites, and consequently, they can use this information to help boost thier page rank by adapting the contents of their websites to match what people are searching for most.

Search Word Inventory

I just wanted to say a little something about the class. When a friend of mine asked me a couple weeks ago what class I take, I told her Search and the World Wide Web. Then she said "What kind of a class is this? I know how to search the internet." Then I started laughing and I said "ohh no you don’t. I thought I knew too, but I found out that I don’t." Every single person out there, who has not taken this class, thinks that he/she knows how to search and find information. But in fact, no one knows anything.
It surprised me that there are different ways to search for different information. All characters make sense and are needed to specify the search. The class exercise for the Search Word Inventory Project opened even more the world of internet. I have heart so much for the internet, I know that there is any kind of information, but every single day I learn something new. Even things that are minor details and are not really useful can be found online. I just wonder how can people spend time for something, just because it is of their interest and not get paid for it, but to let the public to have access to it. I also wonder who pays salaries to those creative people, who like to spend time researching and gathering information, statistics and provide us the data. Well, I guess some people just love their hobbies and enjoy what they are doing. I am just happy that I took his class, because every gained knowledge is a plus for our future.

Hello everyone,

I thought yesterday's class was fun! I never really knew how much confusion there could be about trying to locate a top known brand. It makes perfect sense though. I definetly learned a lot about some of these companies and the areas they they do well in and who their origional founders were. I love learning about the history of different places and or people. Our class is very diverse and it is neat to see how everyone has different focuses when it comes to these projects and the differnet graphics they use which says a lot about them.

I must say that presenting is not my strongest point and I had no idea that this class would be structured with so many small presentations; however, it is really helping me to practice with articulating things more clearly and getting up in front of audiences even though I know very little about the subject of choice. I am learing many new things and that is the most important matter. I can honestly say that I am more confident now in giving presentations even though the ones we have had are not the most structured, they have truly helped me!

Hello EVERYONE!!!!
With our days being numbered in the class, we all must look back on what we have learned throughout this short quarter. 2 days remain in the class and I have so much more to learn about searching the web. What I have learned thus far in this amazing class is how to utilize the web rather than just searching for boring useless information. I now know how to search for useful content; which the web is full of.

Each project we have completed has taught us all a lesson on how to use the web to its fullest. Being able to analyis specific brands, as we did in todays class, gave us all a good look at how to use the internet to promote specific products. I choose Ferrari, to go along with my Expensive Things Blog, and it has taught me how companies should market there websites in order to optimse searches for its brand name.

Furthermore, these blogs that we have been creating in class has really allowed me to share my thoughts about the world as well as this class, with everyone in the class. I think it is a great outlet to share my thoughts. I think I will continue to post blogs in the future even after this wonderful class is over.

iTunes vs. Limewire

That was the title of my final choice for todays class. After much persecution and prejudice I was finally allowed this as a topic.

My first choices were myspace (was ignored) -> Donald Trump (Not allowed) -> Britney Spears (right after someone took martha stewart, still wasnt allowed) -> iTunes.

Then 90% into my iTunes powerpoint I was verbally assaulted that Limewire wasn't even a competitor of iTunes.

After surpassing all of these barriers in my way to success I achieved my goal and factually reported on the status of iTunes and Limewire as competitors.

I would thank to de-thank Dennis and Professor K. for trying to crush my hopes and dreams!

Blogs generally represent products, personalities or information’s about a certain web site or a service, Bloging about a product or city will benefit the general public including students and visitors. Since blogging is becoming a really big thing in the online world, it is starting to be very important and often used by businesses. Some companies are starting to use blogs for marketing and PR success. Smart companies have realized that blogs are having positive effect on business. It doesn’t matter is a company is small like Stonyfield or like Microsoft and IBM, every business sees a future in blogging. Believe it or not people are starting to write books on how to make a successful blog for your company. The one book that I found is "What could your company do with a blog?" by B.L. Ochman. The book is 105 pages, it has 85 examples of business blogs and also talks about on how to blog and what to blog about. You will be amazed that the price of that book is $97.00. I think this is too much for such a book. But I guess it is an educational one, so they think that it is worth it. When you look that there are 85 examples of blogs, you probably wonder how they can be that many. So, I am providing just some of the blogs, just to get an idea:

The new trend: vlogs

Has anyone heard of vlogs before? I just found an article on ProQuest that talks about them. They are like blogs, except they have a video format.

With the proliferation of devices like the video iPod, the vlog boom is on. As of March there were more than 6,500 vlogs, says directory Mefeedia.com, compared with fewer than 300 a year earlier. Apple's iTunes store has offered vlogs for download as video podcasts since October, giving sites like Rocketboom a potential audience of 40 million iPod users. And there's good news for vloggers who want to monetize their fame: Advertisers are getting more comfortable with online video spots. In the United States, Internet video ads brought in $225 million in 2005 and are expected to break the $1 billion mark in 2008, according to eMarketer, a New York research firm. They also operate with amazingly low overhead.

The posts about the history of blogs were great. I was curious about where blogging is headed in the future, so I did a search on Google. I found an article on BusinessWeek that's interesting. It's over a year old, but it explains clearly the concept of tagging, which I hadn't quite understood before. Blogs are about to grow up. As newborns, blogs were simply diary-like entries on which readers could comment. Then, blogs added Rich Site Summary (RSS) feeds, notifying readers when a new entry was posted. Still, as Richi Jennings, of Ferris Reseach, writes in his blog , discussions on blogs can hardly be called conversations, like the ones we can have over e-mail or Instant Messenger (IM). "Comments are too prone to comment spam, most people find it hard to understand the concept of trackbacks, and the whole thing is just too difficult," he says. Basically, today, blogs are more akin to cave men?s disjointed mumblings than the Gettysburg Address.

Blogs are about to evolve, however, thanks to an idea called tagging. Tagging is a software tweak that's already used on photo-sharing site Flickr.com, for example. Here's how it works: As the site's users post their photos for everyone on Flickr.com to see, they tag a photo taken in, say, Iraq, with a tagline, "Iraq." A blog search engine called Technorati.com uses these tags to retrieve search results. If you entered "Iraq" into its search dialog box, the engine would serve you up with news stories, blogs -- and photos tagged with "Iraq" (See this article on Salon.com for other examples of tagging).

Such tags could completely change the way we blog and communicate, believes Glenn Reid, who, while at Apple, created iPhoto. In a recent blog entry, Reid gives a great example of the possibilities: All reader comments on all blogs could, potentially, be linked up based on their tags, so that, instead of following individual blogs, people would be able to follow conversations on specific topics (such as Iraq) conducted on hundreds of blogs.

Searching for data will become a piece of cake. Information will spread around the blogosphere a lot faster. And blogs will, in some cases, become a viable alternative to e-mail and IM, writes Jennings. After all, we use e-mail and IM for conversations on specific topics. Today, you might send an interesting article with a personal comment to your 40 best friends via e-mail. Tomorrow, you might comment on it on your blog, and your comment would reach 4 million people, including all your friends. Not bad, huh?

Check out the site http://www.isoc.org/internet/history/brief.shtml for a complete history in the internet; it is a really interesting site. Believe it or not Al Gore's name does appear in there briefly :-). It has the origins of the internet dating all the way back to the 60's, as well as some of the challenges faced during its creation. I was playing online earlier when I had some time to kill and I found this funny bot site: http://www.alicebot.org/ click on the left site "chat with alice" and you will talk to a bot. Each session is unique, so it can remember things like your name. It's pretty amazing how many responses the bot has, I believe the code is open source, so anyone can contribute to it. Having options are better then not knowing at all

Hello all,

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend. I just realized it is almost the end of the quarter and so far, I have been discovering how to utilize google to it's fullest. I feel much more confident in my internet literacy because I am learning fairly quick as we go along. It is nice to finally have the time to explore more with the various options on the world wide web and put it to works. I am also happy that we have experimented with google, being that it is one of today's fastest internet search engines.

Another interesting site on google.com is froogle. I never really used froogle in the past, but I have begun to browse through it more, and not only do I think it offers great prices on name brand items, but I also think it carries hard to find accessories, so you might find something in there that you couldn't find in a regular retail store or even ebay :)

After watching presentations I liked the idea of Google placing more content on its main page. So I decided to give the Personalized Home page a try. I placed topics that interested me including the news, weather, date, and horoscope. I didn’t mind all of this at first. But every time I would go to search on Google I would get to the page and get distracted by headlines. I would stare at the main page and realize I had come to Google to search for something in particular. Waste of time!

Now I understand the approach of keeping it simple and I appreciate it. I went back to the nice and clean Classic (Google) Home page. After experiencing this if I could do the Google My Way assignment all over again I wouldn’t change anything! I have no objections to it. I love it!

My family is originally from the islands and I have never been. I decided to take the opportunity to explore the diversity of Fiji and learn more about my roots. Yes, we know that celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Britney Spears love to travel to the islands for vacations and honeymoons and rent out an entire island. I am having a blast creating and personalizing my blog. I just added two cool links: Weather Pixie and Flickr Zeitgeist. Weather Pixie gives the current weather anywhere in the world. It’s really cute. Flickr Zeitgeist is specifically made for placing into blogs. It shows new pictures that have been added onto Flickr.com by people and are available to share. Many of the great pictures that you will find in my blog are from Flickr.com.

Did you know that since March, 2003 (the first blog was found) until February 2005 has grown from 1 to close to 8 million blogs out there and 937 million links. This information is being tracked by Technorati. The company also notices that today between 30,000 and 40,000 blogs are being created every day.
This information looks really interesting to know and see how fast it is growing. Take in mind that our class blogs are not included as well as the last years till today. That means that the numbers are going to be even bigger. Pretty cool...

History of Blog

Have you ever wondered what is blog, who introduced it, when it came and why. When I first heart that word, I did not know it means and what it is used for. Have this class helped me understand it and I saw that there are thousands blog out there, each unique and interesting. Dave Winer is one of the first blog developers. Here is how he defines blog: "Weblogs are often-updated sites that point to articles elsewhere on the web, often with comments, and to on-site articles. A weblog is kind of a continual tour, with a human guide who you get to know. There are many guides to choose from, each develops an audience, and there's also comraderie and politics between the people who run weblogs, they point to each other, in all kinds of structures, graphs, loops, etc."

The blog started together with the internet and the online communication. Searching for more information I found that the first blog was developed in 1994, when a Swarthmore College student Justin Hall started his personal blogging and for 12 years now he is the number one blogger out there.

Below I found a timeline of the first bloges created.

Dawn of Internet Time: Tim Berners-Lee at CERN begins keeping a list of all new sites as they come online.

June 1993: NCSA's oldest archived What's New list of sites.

June 1993: Netscape begins running it's What's New! list of sites.

Jan 1994: Justin Hall launches Justin's Home Page which would become Links from the Underground.

April 1997: Dave Winer launches Scripting News. His company, Userland, will release Frontier, Manila and Radio Userland, all website and blog content software.

Sept 1997 Slashdot launches their news for nerds.

Dec 1997: Jorn Barger coins the term web log.

November 1998: Cameron Barrett publishes the first list of blog sites on Camworld.

Early 1999: Peter Merholz coins the term blog after announcing he was going to pronouce web blogs as "wee-blog". This was then shortened to blog.

Early 1999: Brigitte Eaton starts the first portal devoted to blogs with about 50 listings.

July 1999: Metafilter's earliest archives.

July 1999: Pitas launches the first free build your own blog web tool.

August 1999: Pyra releases Blogger which becomes the most popular web based blogging tool to date, and popularizes blogging with mainstream internet users.

Travel to Bulgaria

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to let you that I am working on my blog, which is Travel to Bulgaria. May be many of you are wondering what is Bulgaria and where is it. Bulgaria is a small eastern European country. It located east of Black Sea, south of Romania and north of Greece and Turkey. Since it is a small country it is not known by a lot of people. That is why I am doing my blog about traveling to Bulgaria. I wanted to introduce it to you and everyone else, to see that there are a lot places around the world that are beautiful and fun to visit. I know that the popularity of a country really depends on its political and economic stands, but that is not the most important thing.
To some people Bulgaria is a top pick place for vacations. Having the combination of sea and mountains makes the country really attractive. It is just wonderful to go there over the summer, to enjoy swimming, relaxing, games and very crazy night life. Tourists can do the same things during the winder, except that there is not sea, but big snowy mountains. You can see many photos of the country and its attractions at www.myphotographs.net/bulgaria/bulgaria.html. Currently Bulgaria is trying to enter the European Union. It is in the union because of its economic status. The Union gave a time frame to Bulgaria to get better for about 3 years. At the beginning of 2007, the union will state whether Bulgaria deserves or not to enter the union. For those three years, there have been many positive changes made. The first Mall of Sofia was opened, (Sofia is the capital). You can see at www.mallofsofia.com. It has some really cool pictures and plan photos of the building. With the first mall, the first 3D Movie theater was opened too.
Another change that was made is a mini version of Disney Land, called Sofia Land. It is a much smaller park, but it has many entertainments for kids and adults. You can see it at www.sofialand.bg.
Many other changes have occurred, including constructions, road work, new buildings, better restaurants, shops and many more.
I am really happy watching how Bulgaria is positively changing. I will be regularly posting things about Bulgaria, so please ask me what you wanted to see and learn about this country.

Adsense rocks, I've already made $0.78! I got 18 cents from the first click and 60 cents from the second....now I just need to get more traffic to my blog. Btw, my blog is about anything having to do with UWB...if you want to advertise for an event or club, tell a story, ask a question to fellow students or faculty members, or just give props, suggestions, or rants about the school please come by and do so. Today at work I was talking with my friend/co-worker about how much the internet has changed our lives; imagine what life would be like without it...no e-mail, no Myspace, no blogs, no blackboard, no Google or Wikipedia, no instant news or research...it's crazy to think about how much convenience has been added to our lives by this invention. One of my favorite things to do online is research stocks...my dream is to one day run my own mutual or hedge fund. I read an article the other day about how the US is lagging behind other industrialized nations when it comes to broadband internet access for households. I think this is very bad and will greatly impact the economy in the future. Think about how much information is provided and how much time is saved by having broadband; broadband access is also far more expensive here than in most other industrialized countries. I HATE Comcast...talk about a monopoly.

Check out http://www.100bestwebsites.org/ for a list of the best sites on the internet. At that site there is also a link that shows the 21 criteria that were used in picking the sites. Some of the sites included on the list are yahoo (#1) and google (#2) what a shock. Google groups and Google news made the list at #'s six and seven. IMDB.com is one of my favorite sites and it is on there too. It stands for internet movie database, at that site you can type in a movie, actor, director, etc...and it will give tons of info about whatever you type. If you type in a movie it will give the entire cast, then you can click on a cast member and it will show all the movies/shows they have been in, even ones that are still in production. moviemistakes.com is another fun movie site, it is mostly editing mistakes from movies, it's amazing to see what people find there.

- 57% are male
- 48% are under age 30
- 70% have broadband at home
- 82% have been online for six years or more
- 42% live in households earning over $50,000
- 39% have college or graduate degrees

I am still having trouble making my blog come up on google.com! I didn't know that there would be that many websites about techno music in seattle. I thought that by narrowing it down geographically that I would be an easy hit off of google, but I guess I was wrong. In my description on my page i wrote the words techno, seattle, music, upcoming events about fifty times, but still couldn't get it to come up on google.com. Any suggestions???? Before starting this class I never realized the potential of the blog. I always thought it was for emo kids that complained about life to no one but their two friends. I just assumed it was people who wanted to say something that no one was willing to listen to. In actuality, blogs are a massive part of the information on the web today. Blogs have evolved so everyone who is anyone has one. Radio stations get a lot of their up-to-date information on band blogs, as well as race car drivers, singers, actors, and anyone with a fanbase. Hey everyone,

The blogs of the individuals in the class have been very interesting. Each page is completly different and have a lot of content. Pages like Nates Fansite is extremely entertaining. I feel that the blog assignments have been very entertaining allowing us to show creativity; something that is not often expressed in business school. I hope to see more content on all of the blogs in the future and hopefully with lots of useful information.

Before starting this class, I have always thought a blog was for someone who had something to say but that no one wanted to listen to. Having been searching for blogs and creating them in this class, I have found that a blog is very useful to gather information about any topic. There are millions of blogs availible for anyone to view. The idea behind the blog is extremely wonderful being that it collects thoughts of people all over the world and allows all that information to publicly accessible.

I have also found out from Sandeep that people actually make money from being blog consultants. It is not a industry that I would like to venture into, but it just goes to show that people are able to make money off of any type of business venture; and from what Prof. Sandeep tells me, a very lucritive venture.

Attempting to reach the top of Google's search is proving to be rather difficult for many. I however have reached the top with just my name "Dennis TJ Wang". I am #1 and #2 with my Blog and my student home page. However, I have witnessed what Nate has had to do just to be on the first page of Google's search under his name.

The internet is a interesting place where many individuals can make lots of money. However we must be careful about the shady sides of the internet. There are plenty of scams on the internet, we see these scams generally in EBay and other auction sites. And many times it is very difficult to tell who is telling the truth.

The first method is to submit your web site via Google's free submit your site form. Just submit your home page and Google's crawler, Googlebot, will crawl the rest.

2. Get Linked From A Site That Google Crawls
The second method is to get a site that Google already crawls to link to your site. So when Google recrawls the web site, it will find the link to your site and crawl and index it as well.

Google has many features that I never thought it does. Creating your own Google is just amazing. We can create our own page including every thing we want and customizing it the way we want it. It is interesting how also we can structure our own Google page. It was a great learning experience from what we covered in class so far; having each student analyzing and researching one of the Google s features and presenting in it to the class had made a lot of sense. Also it gave us an idea about their competitors and how much traffic they get. I personally did maps.google.com and I found a lot of competitors and much information about it. I learned more about this feature. The functions “Similar pages” and “Catched” were also helpful and I had never used them before. Today, it is an easy process in the web research. I am really enjoying this class; it really simplifies the internet research and makes it easier to me on research in less time consuming to find the information.

Amazing really, that you can create your own google search engine. We could have called it anything we wanted for that matter although im not sure the legality of that. It is unbelievable that you have that much power in your hands so easily. You can search the entire web with your own personal web searcher. I thought that was pretty ridiculous. Simplicity is really all I look for in a search engine so as long as google stays basic like it is, then I dont have any use for my own. But soon as they start throwing ads up there then im going to use my own version.

I can't wait to start expanding my super cool blog about myself. My goal is to beat out Dr. Nathan MacDonald for the #1 spot on google. We'll see how it goes, quite surprising how many people with my name are out there. Some canadian hippy folk singer is taking #2 so I had better definately beat him out.

Anyways, I have 15 credits this quarter and a sick amount of work to do in the next 2 weeks. This class really has been the most enjoyable and informative class I have. I wish more teachers would take this practical aspect in more classes. Especially summer classes when the goal of most students is just to learn something useful instead of cranking through books on sunny days.

i had no idea that there was so much that you could do on google.com! i really enjoyed the presentations on the different things that google had to offer, and i have actually started to employ my new knowledge of google in my everyday search inquiries.
Also, i thought it was really cool learning to make our own web pages in word documents. I dont think that many people know that you can do that, and even if they did, they probably haven't tried it. I found it amazingly simple, and i thought that it was so cool that we were able to learn that so fast. I thought everyone did a great job, although i really feel that google.com is so successful because of the nature of the simplicity of their site.

I just found a new super cool Google feature; it's called zeitgeist. It gives the most popular google searches for the last week. You can also look at archives for any month since 2001, or yearly archives as well. It even gives year-end top 10’s for categories, such as women, men, movies, tv shows, new products, music groups, retailers, news sources, etc... I looked up zeitgeist because I had no idea what it was. Apparently it is a noun, “The spirit of the time; the taste and outlook characteristic of a period or generation.” Anyways, I would highly recommend playing around with this feature, it’s pretty interesting to see what people were googling in the last few years. Example, in 2001 Nostradamus and Osama Bin Laden were the top two men to be googled.

Also, I found a really excellent resource that goes along with what we’ve been learning about Google. The address is http://www.creativeconfusion.net/search_engines/google-commands.html
It gives all sorts of commands to use in the Google search. For example, did you know that Google does math? Type 49/7 or some other arithmetic problem in the bar and click search, the first result will be your answer. One more really interesting site that I found this week is http://searchenginewatch.com/. It has news and other noteworthy features about what else, search engines! I found a good article about yahoo renewing a contract with Google to use some of their search results. It made me wonder why Yahoo can’t get the same results on their own. If anyone is interested, the article is available at http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/article.php/2165081
The two companies seem to use different methods to get their results…“In a unique twist, Yahoo didn't simply renew the deal for Google to be its "backup" partner, used only when Yahoo itself doesn't have an answer. Instead, the company has embraced Google's results even more tightly. Unveiled to the general public today is a new Yahoo search results page, where there is no longer a separation between Yahoo's own human-powered listings and Google's crawler-based results. Instead, the two are blended together.”
Speaking of Yahoo, I showed a few of my friends my “Google My Way” page. They all liked it more than the current version of Google. I told them it was an attempt to take the best of Google and Yahoo and combine it and they thought it was a great idea. Two of the four friends were Yahoo users and they said they went to Yahoo because they like being able to glance over the latest news and easily find stories of interest. I think it would be good for Google if they made it easier for people to customize their own Google pages. Like Gmail, I don’t think they are doing a very good job of publicizing a service that a lot more people would be interested in.

Google has competitve advantage with Google Finance

I found an article “Google Finance: Tapping a Rich Vein of Investors” from Forrestor Research which mentions that the Google user base is largely composed of affluent investors. (You’ll find it here: http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/bnet/0324google_Finance.pdf)

This is good news for the beta version of Google Finance and is another great strategic move for Google. The article notes that even though the beta version still has ways to go with improving features to compete with sites such as Yahoo Finance it has a better reach. Research shows that 38.2 percent of regular Google users have assets (investment) of $100K plus while Yahoo has 32.5%. Given this Google appears to have a greater competitive advantage.

I was skeptical at first for the prospect of Google Finance especially competing with big players such as Yahoo Finance and MSN Money. However, reading this article Google has a great opportunity to capture their affluent users. It also appears that the company has done great market research in targeting its customers.

Check out the article I think you'll enjoy it. (Especially if you're like me and enjoy charts and statistics :))

Google My Way

Whoo hoo hoo , how wonderful I made my own Google. It is really interesting how you do it. Again simplicity in their WebPages is one of the key successes for Google Company. I made my own Google and I linked all the interesting links that I thought are important in a very simple way; I also made it the way I want it “Google My Way”.: )
So far, I have learned a lot of stuff in this class. It is interesting how you can create your own Google page from scratch, which I never thought I can do. Being responsible for creating your own page had made me and the rest of the class think about some additional resources to add that might help Google to get more traffic. Implementing some features such as sport, weather, travels and housing will definitely lead to more traffic.

It is wonderful that we are coming up with some ideas for Google and we believe that it will benefit the company to get more traffic.

I thought this was a great week of classes. Being forced to research, compile, and present a topic in just a couple of hours helps me to stay focused and motivated. I'm impressed by everyone's ability to create interesting and informative presentations in such a short time.

As a seasoned business student, I'm surprised I never thought before about how Google makes its money. As the company created new products, I just thought, "Cool...something new to try." I never considered why Google introduced them, or how the new products might give them a strategic advantage in the future.

I think its interesting to compare everyone's views on how Google should structure itself. Presumably, we're all reasonably strong fans of Google. However, some of us think the main search page should be kept basically the same as it is now, while others insist that the main page needs to offer more content. I can see the advantages and disadvantages of either approach. I think it will be fascinating to see what Google does about this issue in the future.

As Google continues to expand, it seems that the company might lose some of its creativity and agility. What do you think? Will the company become another slow-moving giant? Or will it retain the ability to adapt quickly to change?

Well another day is done and I can honestly say that I have learned plenty. I am very greatful for the task of creating my own improved Google site has done in training me to be a creative and productive web developer in the business world. Looking through the archives of Google's past home pages is significant in exhibiting precisely how adaptive and flexible that not only search engine's but all businesses must be in order to succeed. Almost everyday there was something added or changed on Google's home page.

Creating a brand new Google page with the intent of attracting new user's and directing the search traffick through Google as much as possible enables business students to develop as creative visionaries. As I began to ponder different strategies to accomplish this feat, I was directed to check out other search engines to see what Google may have been missing. After reviewing Yahoo's page, I noticed something quite different. After typing in the address, the viewer is flooded with information and images on the first page. Maybe I'm just simple minded, but I was confused and overwhelmed and the smooth, simpleness of Google's page was much more attractive.
Eventhough Yahoo seems more complex and professional, I came to realize that Google contained just as many special search options as its counterpart. You just have to do some "digging."
I was also intrigued by the way that Google determines which links to post on its opening page. By using the "search inventory" website any web surfer can figure out which links are the most popular. That probably explains why Google must change so much over time since the popularity of certain types of searches also changes.
The days task was a bit challenging for me, but I think I got the hang of it.
Oh by the way, I'm proud to say that I am creating a blog that attempts to gather a voice around helping those inflicted by Hurricane Katrina. Learning new meanings on WWW

Hello all,

I don't know about you guys, but so far, I have learned a lot of new things just by using google. For one, I was absolutely fascinated that I could find my parents home address along with their full names and extra activities that they were involved in just by typing in their home phone number. I don't talk to my dad all that often and I found out that he is a chief now for the Everett Sail &. Power Squadron. I called him soon after class to tell him and he was impressed that I could pull up all that information on him just by entering in his home phone number.

I also like that google has a great language translator. I think that this could be handy to many businesses or even people taking trips to other countries who want to learn some basics for better communication during traveling. I thought it was very easy to access and understand.

I am very excited to learn a little more everyday about what the internet has to offer. It is not often that I get the chance to simply browse the internet and all of the different sites it has. Google so far has been a great search engine in helping me to locate information I've needed to complete assignments from school and more. I am glad it has friendly user-ability :)

Search and the World Wide Web

On the right hand side of the Google page is the sponsored link results, which are basically paid spots for advertisements. These spots are different for every search, in other words they are not time based (for the 15 minutes) but search based and will vary by the key word searched. Here is an interesting question “Could Google also have a running strip or a special spot for advertisement by time?” Google may charge the advertisers phenomenal amount during the peak internet surfing hours. This could also prove to be extra beneficial during decisive mega sports events, elections, and other significant events. Google can optimize its search page space by adding such online marketing options. Easier said than done, there is the risk to brand perception being damaged with such changes.

By the way, I am not advocating anything here!!! : )

Hi everyone!
I looked through all of your homepages and you all seem like a good group of people. Well I have accomplished and learned so much in just one week of this class. This is good since we are ¼ of the way done with class! I am so excited that we have the privilege to work on computers in the lab. I think it’s a great idea and more teachers should take the approach in letting students interact with computers. As graduates we will be expected to be experienced in using computers by employers. I think this class will really prepare us to become excellent information seekers as someone else mentioned in an earlier blog post.

In the past week I made my first homepage! Check it out at http://students.washington.edu/sbuksh/. I am very proud of it. I had no idea what I was doing on the first day of class! I thought that I had signed up for an advanced class. However, SimpleSite has made it pretty easy for a beginner such as me to add content. I’m still learning how to manage my homepage and I hope by the end of the quarter I will learn new tricks and pick up vocabulary along the way. This will be the closest I will get to Myspace!

In the first class session the Scavenger Hunt exercise prepared me for more advanced searching with the Google Drill. I was surprised to see that the teacher evaluations were available online. I had the hardest time finding this piece of information. It’s too bad I learned about it now in my last quarter at UWB. As Professor Krishnamurthy said “Information hides.” It surely does! I will never assume that data isn’t available online because there is a great possibility that it is available and can be found with the right search techniques. The second hardest item to find was the post by Professor Krishnamurthy. I had no clue that Google Groups maintained such posts which actually date back to 1981!

I am a loyal user of Google. It is the only search engine that comes to my mind when I search for information. I have always taken the approach of entering keywords and attempting to refine my search from those results. I was amazed at the many diverse products that Google offers. I never cared to click the “More” link. My first time clicking in class I was amazed at the list of products which included Google Scholar and Picasa for editing pictures. Does anyone know why the main Google search page doesn’t include the list of all the other products?

I found myself over the past couple of days using the new ways to search on Google and found things more time efficiently. The Google Drill exercise helped me find a better respect for the search engine. There are so many useful methods to conduct a search on Google that I can’t keep track of them all. I was able to find a page that has condensed little tricks in the form of a cheat sheet. Check it out and add it to your favorites: http://www.google.com/help/cheatsheet.html

How to link your work to your own web

After you done your work, you would like to post or link it to your own website. How are you going to do that? It is a common question. It took me a while to learn how to do it. First you go to http://catalyst.washington.edu/ website. Then you click on Web Tool Login. It will drive you to UWnet ID login webpage. At this page you will login by typing your UWnet ID and password, then click ok. At this point, you have already in Catalyst web. You will see your name on the top left of the page. Click onto the Edit simple which is located at the same line with your item name. For example, my item name is http://students.washington.edu/quachb/ Lick on to Upload file which is located at the top of the page Lick on Browse to find the file which you would like to post into your web. Then click OK. You will see your desire file appear on the left column. That mean you are successful upload your file into your website. Congratulations! Now you would like your desire file appear as a link in your index content. Click on index.html on your left column. Click on edit content on the right column. Then lick on simple Edit Now you are looking at your own web page. Type whatever name you would like to represent your desire file. For instance, I type “Google drill” for the file answer the exercise "the Google drill". Click on simple "insert web link"

At URL, enter the path http://student.washington........./(the exact name of the file which you already upload and it is appeared on the left column). The http:.... path you also can find at the right top corner of your webpage. Then lick ok
For example, my file name "drill.doc". So the bath of my URL will be: http://student.washington.edu/quachb/drill.doc

Congratulations! You just convert your work into your own website.

Everyone is become “googling” after finished “the Google drill”. This exercise is very helpful which is helping me, personally, familiar with the search’s technique.

Everyone knows Google now is the most powerful web search on the world. From Google webpage, people can easily located any places that they would like to go or track a friend’s house or phone number easily by just typing their name into the search box. What’s a amazing! This kind of search I don’t think that we can do with yahoo website which is also consider as a powerful world wide web. Through “the Google drill” I learned a lot of things which I have never know before.

I love the part that we can search the information we need in education or government range only. This is a good part about Google because sometime the result of a research become wide and useless deal to the purpose of the search we want; therefore, limited the result of the research in the range education for instance, will remind the researchers that they are in the right search and all the information they are looking at now is in education web site. I also have learned today how Google can be guided with relevant results in a short amount of time that help you know right away where and how to look.

Today, Google is the one of the most powerful research engine around the globe. Google has a lot of features that we can use in our research. I have never thought about these features and how helpful they are. By implementing some key terms in the research box, it totally simplifies the research and makes it easier to find.
What we studied so far in class has helped a lot and I will definitely use it in the future; so far I did change the way how I do research in generalJ. Before, I used to just put some key terms and words and look up at the result. Now I do it perfectly especially when you are comparing some thing or looking for some true/false articles. The other features such as groups, images, news and maps are so helpful. It takes the research automatically to the closest concerned data. The data base is just amazing and you can find any thing you want, from businesses phone to VIN numbers for cars and various products around the globe.

The web is an ocean of information, information is abundant. The key is to fish for the information that is applicable by the right tools to get it. A search that amazed me today was finding the available real estate properties with in a specific dollar range from a mashed website. It basically superimposed the information from Craig’s list to Google maps, what a wonderful tool and innovated way to display information. It was helpful to understand the classification of information in different ways, Human Classification (by subject) and Algorithmic Classification. This reduces the time and effort that is necessary in classifying and then finding information. Thank you.

Google Bomb!

Okay, I had heard the term “google bomb” before, but I always thought it meant to keep doing searches with different terms until you found what you were looking for. In fact, I am positive that I have given at least one person the wrong definition of that term…oops!
I had no idea that people could do that, i.e. the George Bush miserable failure thing. I knew that you could type that in google and his page would come up, but I had no clue as to why. At least I do now! I learned a lot in today’s assignment, Google has so many features that I didn’t know about. I think goggle.com/trends is by far my favorite….coke vs. pepsi, spiderman vs superman, Microsoft vs google…this is too much fun. I have a feeling that I will be spending/wasting a lot of time on this site! It’s especially cool because sometimes it gives events that are pertinent to changes in the trends. i.e. when Christopher Reeves died, Superman had a sudden spike in searches. I typed in tax, and there was a crazy spike in mid April…shocker. Now I can see why google stock has performed the way it has…too bad I didn’t borrow money from someone when it went public. Amit was right, this is gonna be a great class. Have a great weekend everyone!

Hi everyone,
So I'm finding that there are many different ways to gather information on the web. This is a pretty cool discovery, because I can save a lot of time and improve my search results as well. For instance, I used to despair when a particular website didn't have a search box on it. Now I know that I can use my trusty Google search tool to find anything on any website, just by using the advance search. I suspect I would also use this when a website's search box retrieves less-than-adequate results.

Again, I'm reminded of the scary stories about people being able to track down your name, house, car, social security number, life history, etc, etc. It's really true (or nearly so), and emphasizes the uncertain future of privacy and personal control over information.

I'm pleased to see that we're doing so much hands-on work in this class. In previous jobs I've held, I've often been asked to retrieve seemingly-obscure (but very important) data. In the future, I know this will only increase. My ability to succeed in the professional world is dependent in part on my resourcefulness... thus, by improving my data-finding skills, I am increasing my value as an employee. I'm excited to practice these new skills, so that I don't forget them as soon as the quarter is over.

After the first day of being in this class, I have already realized theres so much about the web that I have no idea about. My notes are filled with interesting ways of using the web that I had no idea existed. I love being over at the computers and applying what I learned. The hands on approach to learning is definitely the way to go.

I am hoping to opening my own business in the future and after a week of this course I can definitely see an advantage of promoting my business on the web. I know that this course will definitely inform me the best possible way to linking people to my website and promoting my business. It has been very fun so far.

So what did I learn today?

First off, we all have a lot less privacy than I'd thought. Bummer. I was kind of used to being able to hide out from the autograph hounds every now and then or so.

Secondly, I learned how to search for sites that link to a particular site, a very handy tool for my upcoming career as a moonlighting webmonkey. Nice to know who's saying what about you and where you should address the checks.

"Google bombing." Fear the power of a nerd herd enraged. The Bothell Math Mafia might decide to make you an offer you can't understand.

Google's translation attempts: Still a few bugs in the system. Someone has set us up the bomb.

Cached pages - if you're a public figure, you can't count on simply updating your site to cover your tracks if you suddenly decide to abandon a previously-announced position on whether or not it should be legal to grow hemp.

That's all I got.

Ah! The world of Google. So simple, yet so sophisticated! Going to school in the information age and pretty much growing up with the world wide web, I can attest to that fact the Google-as a serach engine-has completely revolutionized life for people the world over (China may still be an expection to that, but I'm sure they'll find a way to cut the red tape and let Google and other American search giant flourish on the free internet wavelenghts).

I have leaarned today how Google-and search in general-can be conducted much more effieciently and with relevant results in a short amount of time is you know where and how to look. Simple things like quotations or domain specifications can be of great help when a student like myself is craming for a research project.

Additionally, tools like Google maps, images and directory (among others) can help effectively diversify a search onto many relavent domains and sources.

Honestly now this class is by far the most interesting and wonderful class I have ever participated in in my entire life. There is nothing similar to this class. I actually learn about a tool that I will use for at least the next 10 years on a daily basis. The power behind the WWW is absolutely amazing. Now I can even stalk people. It is good to know how google ranks their pages as well because if you ever start a company website, or even work for a company that has a website im sure they would all appreciate being ranked higher on google. These valuable skills will follow me for the rest of my life, and I thank Sandeep for helping me discover them. You are my hero! I especially enjoy learning about Zillow and other sites that allow you to discover incredible amounts of information. Never again will I rely on a real estate agent, detective, or other absolutely worthless profession to do something I can do with a simple click of the button. Besides that, not having lecture the entire class is essential in a 4.5 hour class. I have 15 credits this summer and I wouldn't be able to handle all three classes lecturing the entire time. I enjoy using computers and I really enjoy learning more about them. This class has opened my eyes to many things I never knew existed already in the two days we have had. This is quite surprising as I have used computers for the massive majority of my life.

The truth is, this class is going to be a lot of fun while learning a lot of information. Hopefully it will be a low-stress enjoyable class in which everyone takes something important away from. Very few classes like this at UWB and I hope to enjoy every second of it!

Hello everyone,
Today's Google Drill, was very benficial to my learning of how to search for stuff on Google. I have been learning stuff that I would have never even attempt to look for. Like the Advanced Search function on Google. Being able to search any site even though they do not have a search box is a very good tool to know about. Another thing I feel is a very good tool is being able to search for different files; like powerpoint and PDF files. Being able to search for different files will allow us students to find useful information on the Internet for projects, reports as well as homework.

Also, what we learned in class about searching for personal information is rather scary. The thought of having all of my families personal information online really makes me worry. Someone should start a company that removes this stuff from the web. I would have thought that this kind of personal information is private and could not be shared with anyone. I do realize that all this information is free to the public, but making it this accessable invites a lot of scary people into your perosnal lives. However, the website, zillion offers very good information if you are in the market to purchase a house. By knowing how much houses around the area are going for, you are able to know the exact value of the house you are looking at. However, the information provided regarding home values is not always accurate. Zillion gets its values from apraises and if the home in question has not be apraised in a long time, the value of the home will be completly off.

Looking back at what we did in class on tuesday, I never realized how hard it was to search for some stuff on the web. Some of the things we were searching for was almost impossbile to find; like the course evaluations; this information was buried deep withing the Universty of Washington home page and was very difficult to loacte. I feel that this excersice helped us find out different ways to search for different stuff; in the past, I would always rely on Google to search for everything, but this excersice has openned up my mind and now I am able to use different sites to search for valuable information. I think that the Internet contains more information that we as people would every want to know, but we must understand how to search for this content. Because there are a lot of sites that are complete junk.

This class so far has been extremely valuable to my learning and I would like to thank Prof. Krishnamurthy for being a wonderful teacher. I hope that the remainder of the quater will be just as fulfilling as these first two days have been. I feel that the knowledge that we will gain from this class will benefit the entire class for the rest of our lives.

Things to learn from Scavenger Hunt.

Here's a list of things I wanted you to learn from the Scavenger Hunt. Hope to see insightful additions to this list. Without further ado-

1- Caching

Did you notice that the list of students from last year was only available through clicking on Google's cache? A cache is an older copy of a file. Even if I delete a page from my server, a copy lives on in the cache.

2- Online does not equal Web.

Did you notice that my post was available on Google Groups? This is a vast collection of information that is online and not on the web. See the Wikipedia page on USENET for more background.

3- Information dies.

It was easier to find information about the latest Fortune 500. But, how about the information from one year earlier? Much harder, right?

4- Information hides.

All of you struggled to find the course evals. Just because information is available online, does not mean it is visible.

5-Things are not available in the format you want.

It was interesting to see how all of you formulated searches. Some searched for seven newspapers in South Dakota and were frustrated not to find any links. If you searched for newspapers in South Dakota, you would have seen the answer.

6- Privacy is limited on the Web.

All of you now know where Bill Gates lives!! Even b.g cannot hide on the web.
